Getting Started: What does Slicie cost?

What we work to accomplish

When designing our pricing model, we set out to achieve this goal:

"If the customer had the perfect hosting plan yesterday, what would they have paid for?"

We don't add extra fees

We always bill based on the cost to provide you with a service. This means that we don't charge for things like adding a domain name, email address, FTP account, etc.

We do charge for things like software licenses, when we are required to pay a 3rd party for that service, but we don't mark up the pricing beyond the retail rates. We typically are able to provide software licenses below their costs, due to our partnerships.

Pay for what you use

When we say that you "pay for what you use", we mean that your costs are tied to our cost to provide you with that level of service. If what you're doing does not add cost, we don't charge you an arbitrary fee.

We do not have "plans" or "tiers"

All of the services we offer are designed to automatically scale up and down. For all of our services, you are billed based on your usage, not a limit or quota.

Server resource pricing

The most common thing you'll pay for, which typically represents the largest portion of your bill, are the resources you use on a server. We charge the same rate for all of our hosting services, including shared cPanel accounts and custom cloud servers.

  • CPU cores are billed at $10 per month.
  • Memory is billed for each GiB of RAM at $1 per month.
  • Storage is billed for each GiB 10 GiB of NVME at $1 per month.
  • Bandwidth, also known as network data transfer, is billed at $1 per 100 GiB.
  • Dedicated Public IPv4 addresses are billed at $1 per month, though they are not required.

We offer free bursting for all of our services. By default, you're not billed for spikes in usage that last less than one hour.

cPanel accounts are also billed for a fractions of the amounts listed, so you don't need to pay for an entire core.

If my usage shoots up, will it cost me a ton of money?

This won't happen, because of the way our automatic scaling works. We have different scaling modes for both CPU and memory, which allow you to control how quickly your hosting resources (and cost) scales.

In addition to our auto-scaling modes, we also provide customizable scaling limits. You can adjust the minimum and maximum amount of each resource, making it easy to control costs.

If you're really worried about your costs, just think of Slicie like a normal web hosting plan. Set the maximum amount of resources you're comfortable paying for, and when you use less than those limits, you'll simply save money. If you decide you want to raise those limits temporarily, for a promotion or rush of traffic, you can always raise your limits temporarily.

How can I predict what my usage will be, before moving to Slicie?

Unfortunately, there's no other company like Slicie, which means thare is no simple "apples to apples" comparison to make.

We've never had a paying customer of Slicie spend more after making the switch. How much are you going to save? It's hard to say.

If you have access to usage graphs for each one of your resources at your current host, you might be able to estimate your costs by roughly assuming your costs on Slicie will be close to the 90th percentile. As in, you won't be billed for your peak usage, but you'll be billed on Slicie for something a bit less than what your 95e would be, on average.

Some reasons you should expect to save money

  • You aren't using the full limits of your hosting plan at our competitors.
  • You'll pay based on your usage on Slicie, so you'll save on the difference between our pricing model and a hosting plan.
  • We make your usage very easy to see and understand, so you can make optmizations and lower your costs.

Do I pay monthly, daily, or hourly?

Although we monitor your usage in real-time, we bill for your usage on a daily basis.

We generate invoices every month, based on each individual day billed within that month.

To keep things simple, the daily cost for everything is one 31st of the monthly cost. This means that at most, you'll pay the monthly rate, but on shorter months, you'll save money.

How will I save money?

On a web hosting plan, you're paying for a specific set of limits.

If you use the limits of your hosting plan, the performance of your server will suffer or cause data loss.

Because you are paying for unusable limits at our competitors, and you pay based on what you actually use on Slicie, you'll save money on the difference between your hosting plan's limits and what you're actually using.

In most cases, people who switch to Slicie were using a small fraction of their former hosting plan, which results in tremendous savings by moving to Slicie.

It's not rare for people to cut their costs down 10x.
