Tests are performed with the industry standard "fio" tool. When other providers use a separate disk than the root filesystem, the test is performed against an XFS filesystem created on that disk, using the same configuration as on Slicie.
The command below is used for these tests, substituting "rw", "bs", and "iodepth" based on the column. Our storage is designed for sustained performance, and if anything performs better with longer tests; however, we opted to use a 30 second runtime to reflect more common use cases.
These results represent what can be reasonably expected from our servers or from the other provider's plans. The performance of storage varies, and it's possible you may exceed these numbers or see lower numbers, especially at our competitors. The performance of storage is an area we intend to improve dramatically as we grow, though even at launch, our storage is far more powerful than any web application requires.
